When the audio signals, which may contain music, news or any other information, are broadcasted through the Internet broadcasting service which is generally referred to as web casting, it is called Internet radio. The device, which is used to receive the signals, which are transmitted via Internet, is called as Internet radio receiver. The signal or data is neither transmitted through wires nor wireless; it is transmitted through the World Wide Web, i.e. Internet. The Internet radios are also called e-radios. An Internet radio receiver is basically a piece of hardware that takes the signals from the Internet and then decodes it to the original audio signal and plays it. The devices, which are in the market generally, support mp3 streaming, Windows Media Audio, and Real Audio.

They use a broadband connection of Internet.

By using an Internet radio receiver, one can listen to the music of one country while sitting in any other country in the world. The technology, which is used to distribute the audio signals via Internet, contains three major components for audio stream. These include: audio stream source, audio stream repeater, and audio stream playback. Carl Malamud first developed the Internet radio receivers and station in 1993, using a technology called MBONE. The internet radio receivers may have various features and may vary in price according to these features. Some of the features which an internet radio receiver may possess are: portability, availability with LCD display, ability to operate on a single 1.5 volt battery, ability to run up to several hours, and may have an amplifier, terrestrial tuner, loudspeaker, wireless links etc. Some other features which intenet radio receivers which are basically designed only for personal computers may possess are: they may have an easy to use interface, audio recording facility, file manager, cd ripper etc.
