Positive And Negative Facts About The Portable Fm Radio
Unlike the old AM radios, which used to be bulky, portable FM radio are easy to carry. The technique used in these radios is frequency modulation unlike the amplitude modulation used in AM radios. Portable FM radios may vary in size whether it is the classic Walkman or the boom box, but ultimately they are easy to carry along with you. A portable Fm radio is one of the most popular communication devices. These radio receivers use only the Fm broadcast band and no other frequency band. They are also called personal walking radios and are transistor based. They use transistors instead of vacuum tubes so they are small in size and affordable. They are light in weight and can operate on a standard flashlight battery or a single compact battery, which could range from 1.5 volt to 9 volt. The Regency TR-1 was the first portable transistor based fm radio. It was launched on October 18, 1954 by the Regency Division of Industrial Development Engineering Associates of Indianapolis, Indiana and put on sale in November of 1954. However, at that time, AM technology was used in the portable radios and also they were more costly than they are today. The AM technology has many disadvantages like, they do not have good sound, signal reception and there is always interference to the signals with the surrounding electricity and telephone wires. But this is not the case with the FM radio just because of the modulation technique used. FM radios are much better than the AM radios in size, cost, sound quality, and signal reception. A portable FM radio receiver has many benefits, such as: they may be of pocket size for portable use, they have built in speakers, they have the provision for an earphone jack so that you can listen to and enjoy the improved sound quality in the noisy environments, they may also have the telescopic antenna, as frequency modulation is used so there is better performance via channel separation, sensitivity, selectivity and sound and lastly portable FM radio recievers are easier to integrate. Present day portable radios have some additional features like, inbuilt synthesizers, standby mode, adjustment free stereo decoder, autosearch tuning, Radio frequency automatic gain control circuit, integrated low noise radio frequency, input amplifier for high sensitivity, etc., depending on their design and technology used. The price of portable radio receivers may vary depending on the features provided along with the radio receivers. Radio receivers with good and extra features may be more expensive than a simple portable FM radio receiver.
Most of the portable fm radios operate on battery power and include earphone jacks and come with single earphones that provide middling-quality sound reproduction. In portable FM radios, the Sony Walkman series is the most popular. However, the Hastings FM, Jr. was a personal FM "walking" radio that led the Sony series. There are other appealing early examples, like the Sinclair FM Watch Radio. Some of the major portable FM receivers available in the market are: Shower Radio, Tunestir iPod & FM receiver, Robic clip-on FM radio, and SONY sports radio Walkman SRF-59SILVER. |
