Radio Receivers Reviews Discussed

Radio Receivers Reviews

In order to appreciate this article fully, it is necessary to have a clear definition of what a radio receiver is and indeed what a radio receiver review is.

Firstly, there are many types of "receiver" but radio receivers are those receivers whose output consists of sound only and whose input is the portion of the EM spectrum normally called "radio". It follows then, that a radio receiver review is a listing or passage that details to a lesser or greater degree, what a radio receiver does, what it looks like, its usability, its cost etc. Also, when compiling a review, it is sometimes useful to compare and contrast the radio receiver in question to others of a similar caliber that may already exist on the market.

Reviewing the Receiver

Radio receivers, like many other technical pieces of equipment should be reviewed in fairly great detail, the results of which should be available for consumer browsing. This is so that the consumer may make an informed decision and prevent any future disappointment.

The Medium Wave Circle website has several receiver reviews which appear to be fairly detailed and hence, in my opinion should be worth reading. To pick an example, the afore mentioned site has a review of the NRD-345. In compiling this review, many variables were assessed. These include; first impressions (or appearance); computer control; modes; the synchronous detector; filters; sensitivity; input filters and attenuator; signal to noise ratio and AGC; the s-meter; phase noise; dynamic selectivity; intermodulation free dynamic range; intercept points; blocking (this is when a stronger broadcast signal over-rides the signal that should be received); other measurements and features (which includes anything that may be unusual or unique about this particular receiver); birdies and finally, listening tests. A short conclusion followed the lengthy review stating that although the NRD-345 looks nice, is easy to operate and is well built, the performance is not great - only fair in fact.

The Importance of Radio Receiver Reviews

To understand the importance of reading radio receiver reviews and indeed to appreciate why the reviews are so detailed, it is necessary to gain an insight into what radio receivers are used for. Receivers pick up signals that may be heard or listened to by the appropriate operator. Therefore, the importance of a receiver is illustrated when considering its use in the military. If a signal cannot be detected or is blocked by a stronger signal then the consequences could be dire. For example, the signal may well be intercepted and then highly confidential (and critical) information such as location (and other intelligence) may be divulged.

Television and radio also rely heavily on radio receivers - without such equipment and indeed without the reviews of such equipment, entertainment as we know it would simply just not exist. Furthermore, as with all technologies, bigger and better versions/models are always coming onto the market. Such bigger and better models should always be reviewed as it enables the consumer to buy with confidence and it promotes a certain standard of good practice from the developers as it forces them to keep standards as high as possible.
